The Language of the Latin Poets: Differences across the Genres

Résumé. ― Cette contribution se veut une étude systématique des différences de langage qui existent entre les différents genres de poésie latine. Ces différences s’avèrent significatives et dépendent à la fois de facteurs métriques et de la hié­rarchie des genres dans la poésie latine et grecque. Après une discussion générale des genres « supérieurs », l’accent est mis sur Catulle, les carmina d’Horace et l’élé­gie amoureuse augustéenne. Avant que soient formulées quelques remarques finales, un certain nombre de caractéristiques typiques des genres dits « inférieurs » sont présentées.

Abstract. ― This contribution aims to be a systematic study focused on differences in language between the different genres of Latinpoetry. It argues that these signifi­cant differences depend on both metrical factors and the hierarchy of the genres in Latin and Greek poetry. After discussing the so-called “higher” genres in general, the focus is subsequently on Catullus, Horace’s Carmina and the Augustan love elegy. Before formulating some final remarks, a number of characteristics typ­ical of “lower” genres are presented.
