Anatomie du pied du cheval et pathologie antique

Abstract

Après l’exposition des notions anatomiques utiles à la compréhension de la pathologie du pied du cheval dans les textes antiques, on envisage l’avalure, l’amincissement thérapeutique de la corne et les conditions d’utilisation du cheval non ferré. La méthode d’abattage antique à des fins chirurgicales est discutée. On compare enfin les affections du pied clairement répertoriées par les vétérinaires de l’Empire romain tardif à l’ensemble des affections actuellement connues.

Equine foot anatomy and ancient pathology. Following a description of anatomical notions to help us to understand equine foot pathology in ancient texts, we will then focus on the growth of the wall, the therapeutic thinning of the horn and the conditions of use of unshod horses. The ancient method of casting for surgical purposes will also be discussed. Finally foot diseases clearly identified by Late Roman Empire veterinarians will be compared to the full range of ailments currently known.
